We are a non-profit association that began in 1976 and we have been recognized
as a society since late 1980. Our members represent the various countries
of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Our goal in the Scandinavian
Society is to develop interest in, and knowledge of, the culture, customs
and traditions of the Scandinavian countries in Nova Scotia. We also provide
assistance to Scandinavians who are new to Nova Scotia as well as those
Scandinavian students undergoing studies here in both secondary and post-secondary
institutions. We can also facilitate contact with a person who has a Scandinavian
background and they will be happy to help you with any questions or language
interpretation skills that may be required. Throughout the year, we have
various activities that help to promote and teach about Scandinavian life.
Some are ongoing activities while others are fun things that we have done
in the past. We also produce a quarterly newsletter and sponsor a number
of cultural groups. For more information on the Society and the events
we sponsor every year, feel free to peruse our pages and please sign our
Guest Book to let us know what you think and to ask us any questions you
may have. You don't have to be a Scandinavian or of Scandinavian descent
to join the Scandinavian Society of Nova Scotia - we welcome anyone with
an interest in Scandinavia. See our membership page for more details on
how to become a member.
